Safer Internet Day 2017

Tuesday 7th February 2017 was Safer Internet Day.

In the UK, Safer Internet Day is organised by the UK Safer Internet Centre (www.saferinternetday.org.uk) and this year’s theme was ‘Be the change: Unite for a better internet’.  Our school participated alongside hundreds of other schools both across the UK and the world.  The internet is now such an integral part of children's lives; it opens up so many educational and social opportunities, giving them access to a world of information and experiences. Whether on a computer at school, a laptop at home, a games console or mobile phone, children and young people are increasingly accessing the internet whenever they can and wherever they are.

Pupils learnt about how to use the internet safely and positively and each class took part in activities on the theme of ‘The Power of Image’, focussing on the role of images and videos in their lives.  More information can be found on our Twitter page.

Y6 explored how quickly messages can be shared. They discovered that if one person shares with two people and then a minute later they all share with two other people and the pattern keeps repeating, it will take 8 minutes for the whole school to know and only 20 minutes for it to spread around the world!

Y5 used emojis to create tips for being safe on the internet.  Can you work out what the messages are in the pictures below?

The children in KS1 learnt all about how Smartie the Penguin stays safe online.  More information about Smartie can be found here: http://www.childnet.com/resources/smartie-the-penguin
